It's time for another post from Jes DeGroot! If you missed her first post about Theatrical Improvisation, (where I also give you a little background on her awesomeness) Click Here, and for her review of The Light in the Piazza – Click Here.
Jes actually sent me this post a few weeks ago… but I've been holding on to it waiting for the perfect moment. As I shared in this post about how to deal with waiting after an audition, I've been waking up each morning wondering when we are going to finally have a new little baby on our hands. I seriously wake up singing “I Know it's Today” from Shrek. So, I thought it was perfect timing for this sweet review on the show. Here's a little taste of this song when the gals from Broadway performed it on the Today Show.
Shrek the Musical is on Netflix!!
It's a big bright beautiful world in Shrek the Musical, written by David Lindsay-Abaire, and music by Jeanine Tesori. Can you believe it, it was just added to Netflix streaming!! I was so happy to find this enormously entertaining theatrical productio—it’s an absolute must see!! It has the same hilarious plot-line as the movie, but this live Broadway recording has so much more energy and life than its film version. The sets are gorgeous and costumes are beautifully put together. Before the actors even step a foot on stage, the set already brings excitement and life to the show.
Four performances that REALLY stood out to me were that of the lovely Sutton Foster as Fiona, Brian d’Arcy James as Shrek, John Tartaglia as Pinocchio, and Daniel Breaker as Donkey. All four actors bring an unexpected, perfect touch of humor to their characters, leaving you laughing your head off with almost every line they deliver.
Of course it has the same old Shrek jokes you’d expect—a little crude and rude at some points, but it is all in good fun. Check out the song, “I’ve Got You Beat,” for a little taste of what I mean. Foster orchestrates the fastest on-stage make-up change as Fiona I've ever seen. Shrek and Donkey are full of those punny puns we all love, Pinocchio's nose growing brings a great laugh, and Christopher Sieber as the villainous Lord Farquaad performs the entire show on his knees—now that’s a feat!
A comical and endearing show, Shrek the Musical, is a must watch for EVERY budding thespian who enjoys a good laugh. So what are you waiting for? It’s ready for you to watch on Netflix streaming right now!
