I have several students attending the upcoming auditions for Into the Woods at Orange County Children's Theatre in March. So, this week’s What to Wear Wednesday focuses on Into the Woods. I directed this show a few years back at The Music Room in Orange (Here's their awesome rendition of Your Fault), so I know it pretty well. If you don't know it, be sure to check out the PBS recording that we suggested HERE in our DVD gift guide.
When you've finished reading this post, you'll feel more confident in deciding what to wear to an audition to Into the Woods, and even have a few suggestions to purchase if you can't find anything in your current closet.
Following the pointers outlined in the first What To Wear Wednesday Post… let’s dive in.
Let's start with a google image search – I searched for “Into the Woods Broadway” to avoid any images having to do with the upcoming movie version of the show.
And… to make things a little more specific, let's divide this post up with 2 roles in mind. The Baker and The Bakers wife.
The Baker
Here's what I notice in this search…
- lots of browns
- puffy shirt sleeves
- vests
- hats
- scarves
- boots
Now, I want to remind you that you DON'T want to wear a costume to your audition. So puffy shirt sleeves, hats and scarves might be a bit too much. Just hint at the character you are interested in. Keeping that in mind, here's what I came up with.

The Baker's Wife
And, for this Baker's wife search, it's good to notice when you are looking at The Baker's Wife and not Cinderella. That's why watching the actual show is always a great idea. The Baker's wife doesn't wear a gown in this show. : )
Here's what I notice,
- long skirts
- peasant blouses
- aprons
- corseted vests
- shawls
- bonnets
Keeping all that in mind, and just hinting at the character. Here's my ideas –

So, there you go! I hope this helps you with finding outfits for all of your auditions. It's a pretty fun little search project.
Please let me know if you have any questions, or ideas of your own, by leaving a comment below.
what about for the witch, Cinderella, or Little Red
Hi Lisa! I think this would work well for the Witch, I’ll work up another post for Cinderella and Little Red. : ) Are you auditioning for Into the Woods?
Hey, I do not see anything? As far as if I’m auditioning, no, my 14 year old daughter is. It is a community theater production for 9-12 graders. 🙂 She is really wanting to get a good part in this.
Awesome! I’m not able to get to a new post til early next week, when is her audition! : )
She is auditioning either tonight or tomorrow night! 🙂 There is going to be a lot of competition and she really wants one of these roles! 🙂
How did it go! I’m sorry I haven’t had a chance to write something up yet! I’d love to know what she ended up wearing and singing.
Hey, That is o.k. She sang Meadowlark and she just found out about 2 hours ago that she got the part of Cinderella! She is excited. I will try and send a picture of what she wore. Do not have it right now. It did help seeing what you put for the Baker’s Wife!!
Ahhhh!!! That is amazing! I actually have a Quick Tip Tuesday video that talks about “Steps of the Palace!” Ha! I’ll find the link and share it here. So exciting!! What a fun part!! I’m going to see a student play the Baker’s Wife tonight! Glad this helped a little : )
I love this! I’d really like to see your vision of a witch audition ensemble. It could be a lot like the Baker’s wife, but I imagine you might have some brilliant takes on some accessories to give it just a bit more witchy flavor.
